What to do if Win2k/XP won't let you add a fax printer for your modem, popping an error like: "please verify your modem is installed correctly" **** So far, you should have a working modem, ie. you can dial up successfully. If you can't, you have to troubleshoot that first. After that, in Control Panel > Fax > 'Advanced' tab > 'Open Fax Service Management Console', your modem should be listed. I've not seen a problem where a working modem hasn't been listed there. Get rid of all relevant windows. Go into Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and uninstall your modem. The fax service might then pop an error on the lines of the modem being disconnected, it might not*. Make sure the spooler and fax services are started ok. Redetect the modem (Right click in Device Manager on , Scan for new hardware). The modem should be automatically installed, or Windows may ask you for drivers. If the latter, go through a normal sane hardware driver installation. At this point, the fax driver might automatically be installed (Control Panel > Printers). If not: Go into Control Panel > Fax > 'Advanced' tab > Add a fax printer. It should install correctly then. If not, remove the modem again. In Control Panel > Printers, add a random (I usually choose HP Laserjet 4) printer (no autodetect!) to LPT1. Then try redetecting the modem and doing again what I previously suggested. * - this depends on whether you configured the fax service in the Fax Service Management Console to receive faxes.
